On Children... A Checklist...

Product Endorsement:

We do not endorse specific products. We are aware of a variety of products including computer chips, "learning keys", fins, rudders, and brakes that have been offered in after-market packaging to improve PWC safety. It is the role of the US Coast Guard to determine safety and efficacy of these products.

PWC "Bans":

We are aware of environmentalist and other water recreational groups who have difficulties with PWC use in various places. We are unable to become involved in these issues because we are working with the craft as they are and as we hope they will become, for safety's sake. Our energies are spent on making the public aware that PWC have significant horsepower, do not steer off throttle, do not have brakes, and that children less than 16 years of age should not operate the craft. We also work to pass boating laws that require boater education for all PWC operators. As we become aware of other information that may help the PWC operator make informed safety decisions, we will also make the public aware. Very simply, we are not interested in banning PWC, but in having PWC operators informed and educated, and in having PWC made safer to operate.

Boater Education:

Boater Education is a minimum requirement for PWC users. Some states require a course that addresses PWC safety issues more succinctly than the standard Boater Education Class. We encourage more appropriate and specific education of PWC operators.

Underage PWC Operation:

The American Academy of Pediatrics, our children's Pediatricians, has stated that children under 16 should not operate PWC - that includes children who have received boater education classes.

Children under 16 do not drive cars, and cars have brakes and will steer when you let off the throttle. Why would you allow a child to operate a vehicle that goes up to 65mph but won't steer off throttle and does not have brakes where there are no defined lanes, and the "road" is an ever-changing dynamic?
